Founded in 1889, in a wave of regional normal schools intended to bring quality teacher education to the new state, Mayville State University has had the practical, realistic needs of North Dakota’s people at its heart for well over a century. Little by little, Mayville’s teacher’s college evolved into a comprehensive state university, with associate’s bachelor’s degree programs across the liberal arts, sciences, and pre-professional disciplines. Today, Mayville State is a small regional public university specializing in education for North Dakota’s traditional and non-traditional working adult students.

Academic Programs

Mayville State operates like a small liberal arts college, but with the affordability and accessibility that defines the public university. That means MSU has a responsibility to provide education to those who need it, reaching out to the people of eastern North Dakota, a rural, agricultural region, with useful programs necessary to sustain the economy and culture. That includes, of course, 11 teaching majors, the result of Mayville State’s normal school history, and a wide variety of majors in the sciences, social sciences, and nursing. Mayville State’s focus in on the best possible teaching for a variety of student backgrounds and ages.

With a rural, spread-out population to serve, Mayville State has also embraced online education, further raising its population of part-time and non-traditional adult students by providing fully online programs. These programs are designed to help working adults improve their credentials and progress in their careers, with in-demand areas like Nursing, Special Education, and Business Administration. Mayville State now has nearly as many part-time adult students as traditional students, and is gaining national attention for the quality and affordability of its online degrees, signalling a new era for the university.

Student Life

Mayville State’s small size – just over 1000 students – means that students get a lot of attention, with a 13:1 student/faculty ratio. It also means that full-time students can build deep, long-lasting relationships within the tight-knit community. North Dakota is a state of rural communities and small towns, so many students feel more comfortable in an environment like Mayville State, where the small town of Mayville feels like home. Mayville State also works to make part-time and adult students feel welcome, and includes special programs for veterans and active-duty military personnel on-campus and online.

Over 20 student-led organizations and clubs help keep students busy when not in class, including cultural groups like the Multicultural Club, honor societies, professional development organizations, and just fun, like Swing Dancing and Theater. Intramural sports are popular, including old schoolyard favorites like flag football and dodgeball, while the Mayville State Comets compete at the varsity level in the NAIA. Varsity sports include football, baseball, and basketball (for men) and softball, basketball, volleyball, and cheer (for women). With a family atmosphere, students at Mayville State work together, learn together, and play together, building North Dakota’s future leadership one step at a time.
