In the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania is Scranton, home to Marywood University. Founded in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary as a women’s college, this private, 4-year school enjoys the local environment with picturesque mountain vistas, fall colors and winter sports nearby. Marywood, a Catholic university, sits on 115 acres of grounds tht are also designated as an arboretum with over 100 types of trees and shrubs in the collection. Its many paths, common areas and gardens offer a truly natural backdrop for reflection, meditation and study. Marywood started admitting male students in 1989. Among the notable alumni of Marywood is former MSNBC presenter Colette Cassidy.

Academic Programs

Marywood University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate and post-masters certificates and Doctorates in over 50 majors. Presently, there is a single Master’s degree program available online. The university is comprised of 6 schools: Center for Interdisciplinary Studies; College of Health and Human Services; Insalaco College of Creative and Performing Arts; Munley College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Reap College of Education and Human Development and the School of Architecture. The university is noted for Nursing, Dietetics, Psychology, Music, Art & Design and Teacher Education; the largest programs on campus are in Health related fields. Per the Mission statement, Marywood “roots itself in the Catholic intellectual tradition, the principle of justice, and the belief that education empowers people. The University integrates an enduring liberal arts tradition and professional disciplines to create a comprehensive learning experience. Our undergraduate and graduate programs promote academic excellence, advance innovative scholarship and foster leadership in service to others… Marywood University prepares students to seek sustainable solutions for the common good and educates global citizens to live responsibly in an interdependent world.”

Student Life

There are about 2000 undergraduate students enrolled at Marywood; most live on campus in one of 8 residence halls and apartments. There are several clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the Forest Green and White Pacers field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition.
