Loyola Marymount University, a private, Roman Catholic 4-year school, sits on the Del Rey Hills bluffs in Los Angeles, CA. It is a large city campus which includes 3 LEED certified buildings on 150 acres not far from the beach. LMU was founded in 1911 as the successor to St. Vincent’s College which was founded in 1865. LMU absorbed Marymount College, founded in 1933 with its roots in Marymount School which was founded in 1923 and was given its present name in 1973. The school is organized under Jesuit and Marymount traditions and is the alma mater to many actors/actresses and, from the Law School, famed attorney Johnnie Cochrane.

Academic Programs

Loyola Marymount University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Senior College and University Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, Master’s degrees, post-master’s certificates and Doctorates in 60 undergraduate and 39 graduate degree programs. The University is made up of six schools: Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, College of Communications and Fine Arts, College of Business Administration, Frank R Seaver College of Science and Engineering, School of Education and School of Film and Television. Loyola Law School is also a part of the University. LMU has specific recognition for their Theology, Art & Design, Teacher Ed, Music and Theatre programs (as well as the Law School); the largest programs are Business (Marketing and Finance), Performing Arts (Production and Studio) and Social Sciences (Political Science and Sociology). LMU’s Mission Statement says the school provides “rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to academically ambitious students committed to lives of meaning and purpose… By intention and philosophy, we invite men and women diverse in talents, interests, and cultural backgrounds to enrich our educational community and advance our mission: The encouragement of learning; The education of the whole person; The service of faith and the promotion of justice. The University is institutionally committed to Roman Catholicism and takes its fundamental inspiration from the combined heritage of the Jesuits, the Marymount Sisters, and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.”

Student Life

The large student population (>9,000) has many clubs and activities to engage them, ranging from affinity, interest and field of study to many service-based organizations serving the local community. Campus housing offers 11 residence halls (single gender and co-ed) and 6 apartments. The crimson and blue Lions field teams in 12 sports in NCAA Division I-AAA competition, represented by the mascot Iggy the Lion. For the non-varsity athlete, there are club sports and Intramurals as well. On campus traditions include a celebratory birthday dunking in Foley Pond (although there are several opportunities to be dunked in the pond). While at LMU, the Mission Statement is a significant part of the student experience – the three primary values of The Encouragement of Learning (critical thinking, development of imagination and artistic expression, ethical discourse and search for values, respect and religious instruction); The Education of the Whole Person (personal integration of the student’s thinking, feeling, choosing, evolving self; formation of character and values, meaning and purpose) and The Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice (honors religious pluralism and embraces inter-faith dialogue, and makes common cause with all who share a commitment to local and global justice)
