Lewis and Clark College is a private 4-year school located in Portland, OR, just 7 miles south of downtown near the Willamette River. The picturesque campus of 137 acres sits atop Palatine Hill in the Collins View neighborhood of Portland and adjacent to the 645 acre Tryon Creek State Natural Area. The school as founded by Presbyterians and chartered as the Albany Collegiate Institute in 1867 in the town of Albany, the school moved to the Portland campus in 1938 and in 1942 adopted the name Lewis & Clark College after the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 1966 Lewis & Clark and the Synod of Oregon agreed to formally part ways. Among the notable alumni are olympic swimmer Matt Biondi and editorial cartoonist Matt Wuerker.

Academic Programs

Lewis and Clark College is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 25 fields of study. Noted for Teacher Education, the largest programs on campus are in Social Sciences, Psychology and Biology/BioMedical fields. Additionally, the school sponsors over 35 overseas study programs and over 60% of graduates have studied abroad.

The college is comprised of three schools: College of Arts and Sciences, containing over 30 departments; the Law School; and the Graduate School of Education and Counseling. “The mission of Lewis & Clark is to know the traditions of the liberal arts, to test their boundaries through ongoing exploration, and to hand on to successive generations the tools and discoveries of this quest. By these means the institution pursues the aims of all liberal learning: to seek knowledge for its own sake and to prepare for civic leadership.”

Student Life

There are over 2000 undergraduate students enrolled in Lewis and Clark College; students are required to live on campus for the first 2 years of their college career in one of the over 12 residence halls and apartments. The school sponsors dozens of clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the orange and black Pioneers, led by Pio the Newfoundland, field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition.
