Founded in 1918 as the Church of God Bible Training School – a small bible institute with just 12 students – Lee University’s first mission was educating believers in the bible for service in the church, as pastors or lay leaders. Over the 20th century, Lee steadily grew, first into a bible college and liberal arts college, then becoming a comprehensive liberal arts university just in time for its 80th anniversary. For many years, Lee University has been recognized as a best value, providing quality education for a reasonable tuition rate, and recently the university has begun winning national recognition – as a Princeton Review top regional college for the Southeast, and as a top-tier regional Southern university in U.S. News & World Report.

Academic Programs

Lee University retains its affiliation with the Church of God, and as a deeply Christian institution, Lee’s curriculum is rooted in a Christian philosophy of education. All educational programs at Lee are designed to help students see Christ the Kingdom of God through the liberal arts; students develop both intellectually and spiritually to take their place in life as Christian leaders and witnesses. As a traditional liberal arts institution, Lee’s core curriculum creates a foundation of classic humanities and sciences, based around the values of Faith and Vocation, Responsible Citizenship, and Ethical Action; service learning, and the development of a global perspective, are also crucial.

Lee offers more than 100 undergraduate majors, and while undergraduate education has historically been its main focus, in the 21st century graduate and adult education have become significant factors. Graduate degrees in some of Lee’s strongest areas include the MBA, Counseling, Education, Music, and Religion, most with multiple specializations. These are programs highly suited to leadership in the church, and many of Lee’s students are bound for religious service, or professional careers that will make the most of their education. Lee also has a growing slate of fully online programs for adult learners.

Student Life

With a student body of well over 5000, Lee University is one of the largest schools in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities; students come from nearly every state, and almost 50 international locations. Women outnumber men by nearly two-thirds. While Lee is a Church of God institution, all denominations are welcome. Student life at Lee University is kept busy and colorful by more than 100 student-led clubs and organizations, from hobbies (like the Knit Wits craft club), cultural diversity representatives, and religious groups.

Service is a major part of student life, with more than 90 service-learning opportunities and more than two dozen service-oriented student groups. Lee has been recognized by the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, and named one of the most committed college by USA Today. The Lee University Flames compete in 20 NCAA Division II sports as part of the Gulf South Conference, carrying Lee’s Christian message onto the field and across the South.
