50 miles northeast of Columbus is Ohio’s oldest private college, Kenyon College in Gambier, OH (some may say that Kenyon College IS Gambier, OH!). The campus sits on 1,000 acres of land which includes a 480 acre nature preserve; the campus is noted for its collegiate gothic styled buildings. Missing from the campus, however, is the obligatory ivy (as in “ivy covered halls of learning”) which actually damages stonework. The gothic beauty of the buildings remains, however. Founded in 1824, Kenyon College is a very selective school affiliated with the Episcopal Church. The remote school is the alma mater of such successful individuals as Rutherford B Hayes and Paul Newman.

Academic Programs

Kenyon College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees in 33 majors. There are presently no online degree programs available. The overall largest program is the Social Sciences, while the most popular singular major is English. Kenyon’s Mission Statement states that the “larger purposes as a liberal arts institution derive from those expressed centuries ago in Plato’s academy, although our disciplines and modes of inquiry differ from those of that first “liberal arts college.” We have altered our curriculum deliberately in answer to changes in the world, as an organism responds to its environment without losing its identity. Kenyon’s founder gave a special American character to his academy by joining its life to the wilderness frontier. His Kenyon was to afford its students a higher sense of their own humanity and to inspire them to work with others to make a society that would nourish a better humankind. To that end, and as an important educational value in itself, Kenyon maintains a deep commitment to diversity. Kenyon today strives to persuade its students to those same purposes.”

Student Life

Residence options for the over 1,500 students includes historic stone residence halls and modern apartments. Single gender and co-ed housing is available as well as program housing and theme housing choices. All entering students are expected to take the “Matriculation Oath” and sign the Matriculation Book – a tradition that dates back more than 100 years! Additionally, there are over 120 on-campus clubs for extra-curricular activities. On the athletic field, the purple and white Lords and Ladies compete in NCAA Division III in 13 sports. There are also several club sports and intramurals for the non-varsity athlete to join. While at Kenyon, students are taught the school’s goals for their education: Liberal Arts studies (fine arts, humanities, natural and social sciences as well as information technology, appreciation for diversity and communication); Excellence in their Major Program (and balance with other programs); Community (close-knit interaction between students and faculty as well as peers); Participation/Involvement (more than curricular activities) and Satisfaction and Accomplishment (success at college translates to success later in life).
