Illinois State University is a public, coeducational institution of higher learning and one of twelve public universities in the state of Illinois. Located in the twin-city community of Bloomington-Normal on a large urban campus close to the geographical center of the state, Illinois State University’s campus is highly accessible due to the several interstates and U.S. routs which intersect at Bloomington-Normal, creating a “transportation hub” and the Amtrak passenger station which is located just two blocks away from the campus. Established in 1857, Illinois State University is the oldest public university in the state of Illinois and was signed into being by Governor William Bissell.
Academic Programs
Illinois State University’s vision is to be “a first-choice public university, [that is] increasingly recognized as a national leader for educating high-achieving, motivated students who seek an individualized and transformative experience.” The University’s mission is to “promote the highest academic standards in our teaching, scholarship, public service, and the connections we build among them.” The University’s mission statement continues, “We devote all of our resources and energies to creating the most supportive and productive community possible to serve the citizens of Illinois and beyond.”Illinois State University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1913. More than 160 major and minor options are offered by the University which is made up of several colleges and schools. These include the College of Applied Science and Technology, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Fine Arts, and the Mennonite College of Nursing. In addition, the University’s Graduate School also offers more than 40 masters’, specialists and doctoral programs.
Student Life
Illinois State University has a total enrollment figure of well over 20,000 students, including more than 18,000 undergraduates. Students hail from nearly all states in the Union as well as several United States territories and over 65 foreign countries. Female undergraduate students slightly outnumber males at nearly 55%, and more than 22% of undergraduate students come from ethnic minorities. Illinois State University is a smoke- and tobacco-free campus; the University offers a variety of on-campus living options to students and provides a number of fitness centers, lounges, study halls, and laundry facilities. Most students are able to select their own room and roommate(s). In addition to its residence halls, Illinois State University also offers the Cardinal Court apartments which are reserved for upperclass students.Illinois State University recognizes a number of student-led groups and organizations which cater to a range of interests and provide students with valuable opportunities to interact with one another outside of the classroom and develop leadership skills. An NCAA Division I-AA school, Illinois State University’s varsity teams compete in the Missouri Valley Conference.
