Illinois Institute of Technology (commonly referred to as Illinois Tech) is a private, technology-focused, research university. Located in Chicago, Illinois Tech was established in 1890 and recently celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2015. One of nearly two dozen universities which comprise the Association of Independent Technological Universities (AITU), Illinois Tech strives to offer “exceptional preparation for professions that require technological sophistication, an innovative mindset, and an entrepreneurial spirit.” The University operates several campus locations including the Mies (Main) Campus, Downtown Campus, and Institute of Design, all in Chicago; the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Campus in Wheaton, IL; and the Moffett Campus (IFSH) in Bedford Park, IL.
Academic Programs
The mission of Illinois Institute of Technology is “to provide distinctive and relevant education in an environment of scientific, technological, and professional knowledge creation and innovation.” Illinois Tech is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1941. A variety of both undergraduate and graduate level programs are offered including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in the areas of engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, applied technology, and law.Illinois Institute of Technology is divided into several colleges and schools, including the Armour College of Engineering, the Chicago-Kent College of Law, the College of Architecture, the Lewis College of Human Sciences, the College of Science, the Institute of Design, the School of Applied Technology, and the Stuart School of Business. Illinois Tech is also home to a number of research institutes, which include the Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH); the Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering; and the Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (WISER).
Student Life
Illinois Institute of Technology has a total enrollment figure of nearly 8,000, including approximately 3,000 undergraduate students. On-campus student housing is available through Illinois Tech’s several residence hall options, including the McCormick Student Village, State Street Village, Gunsaulus Hall, and Carman Hall. Greek Life organizations also have a strong presence on campus and the option to reside in Greek Quad housing is also offered.Students at Illinois Tech stay busy with more than 150 student organizations from which to choose. Groups range from professional organizations to fine arts to the Student Government Association and more. These and other campus events and activities provide students with ample opportunity to interact with one another and with faculty members outside of the classroom and allow students to develop and grow valuable leadership qualities and skills. As an NCAA Division III school, Illinois Tech sponsors more than a dozen varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Scarlet Hawks.
