Howard University is a private, 4-year school located in Washington, DC, adjacent to McMillan Reservoir. The school was founded in 1867 as the Howard Normal and Theological School for the Education of Teachers and Preachers, named in honor of Civil War General Oliver Otis Howard. The school is designated as a Historically Black University (HBCU). The 250 acre campus, set in the Northwest Quadrant of the city, features several historic landmarks including Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel and Frederick Douglas Memorial Hall. The campus contains a large central quad, as well as tree-lined pathways and several small green spaces (unique for an urban location). Notable alumni include choreographer Debbie Allen, entrepreneur Sean Combs and former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

Academic Programs

Howard University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in over 65 fields of study. Noted for Healthcare fields, Theology, Art & Design, Music and Theatre, the largest programs on campus are in Communications and Business. The University is comprised of 13 colleges and schools: Engineering & Architecture; Nursing & Allied Health Sciences; Pharmacy; Arts & Sciences; Dentistry; Business; Communications; Medicine; Law; Divinity; Education; and Social Work. Per the Mission Statement, “Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students. Moreover, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching, research and service, committed to the development of distinguished, historically aware, and compassionate graduates and to the discovery of solutions to human problems in the United States and throughout the world. With an abiding interest in both domestic and international affairs, the University is committed to continuing to produce leaders for America and the global community.”

Student Life

There are over 6,800 undergraduate students enrolled in Howard University, many of whom live on campus among the ten residence halls. The University sponsors over 200 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the blue, white and red Bisons, field teams in 10 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AA competition. Annual events include Resfest – a competition between residence halls for honor and bragging rights, and the Bison Ball – a white tie gala hosted by the Student Association. Students accept the school’s stated Core Values: Core values define the norms and belief system that are utilized to implement the University’s vision. The core values are: Excellence; Leadership; Service; and Truth and understand the stated Vision for the school’s future: “Howard University will be the first HBCU to become a top-50 research university, while it continues its traditions of leadership and service to underserved communities nationally and abroad.
