Hofstra University is a private, non-profit, nonsectarian institution of higher education, located in the village of Hempstead, New York and approximately 25 miles east of New York City. Hofstra University began in 1935 as an extension of the New York University; originally called “Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island”. In 1939 the college gained its independence as Hofstra College and separated from New York University and by 1963 Hofstra was granted its university status. Today, Hofstra University has come to be both nationally and internationally recognized; among its honors and recognitions, Hofstra University has been named a “Best College” by the Princeton Review, ranked among the national universities by U.S. News & World Report, and was called out as a College of Distinction.

Academic Programs

Hofstra University’s main mission is “to provide a quality education to its students in an environment that encourages, nurtures, and supports learning through the free and open exchange of ideas, for the betterment of humankind.” Hofstra University seeks to provide its undergraduate students with an education that is firmly rooted in the liberal arts and sciences for the purpose of encouraging intellectual curiosity and developing students’ analytical and critical thinking. The University has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1940.

Hofstra University consists of several colleges and schools, namely the Frank G. Zarb School of Business; the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which includes the Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs, the School of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, and the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University; the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant; the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication; the Maurice A. Deane School of Law; the School of Education; the School of Engineering and Applied Science; and the School of Health Professions and Human Services.

Student Life

Hofstra University has a total enrollment figure of more than 10,000, including nearly 7,000 undergraduate students. Situated on a 240 acre, suburban campus, Hofstra University offers students are offered housing in nearly three dozen residence halls. A vibrant community, Hofstra University’s campus provides students with hundreds of social, academic and cultural events. The Hofstra University Museum is nationally accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and features approximately 5,000 works of art from all around the globe, sponsors several annual exhibitions and oversees an extensive collection of outdoor sculptures. Hofstra University’s libraries feature more than one million volumes and provide students with 24/7 access to its collection of more than 75,000 full-text journals and 160,000 electronic books.

More than 200 student-led clubs and organizations are recognized by Hofstra University, including more than two dozen local and national fraternities and sororities. An NCAA Division I-AAA school, Hofstra University’s varsity teams compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra sponsors more than 15 varsity sports, including basketball, cross-country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis as well as men’s baseball, and wrestling and women’s field hockey, softball, and volleyball.
