High Point University is a private, 4-year school located in High Point, NC which is in the Piedmont section of the state near Greensboro and Winston-Salem. The school was founded as High Point College by the United Methodist Church in 1924, it achieved university status in 1991. The 300 acre campus features traditional collegiate red brick architecture, much green space and tree lined walkways. The venerable Roberts Hall, the first construction at the school’s founding, dates to 1924 and serves as the Administration building. This landmark building with its clock tower are part of the school’s logo. The NC Piedmont region, whose name literally means “foothills” is rich in cultural American history. Winston Salem hosts “Old Salem” as a living history museum similar in scope (but smaller in size) to Colonial Williamsburg. It is an active and growing area with much to offer.

Academic Programs

High Point University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in over 50 fields. Noted for Teacher Education, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Communications. The University is comprised of eight schools: the David R. Hayworth College of Arts & Sciences; School of Art & Design; Earl N. Phillips School of Business; Nido R. Qubein School of Communication; School of Education; Congdon School of Health Sciences; Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy; and the Norcross Graduate School. Presently, there are no online degree programs, although the University offers over 60 Study Abroad programs, which have been growing in popularity since their inception in 2005. Per the Mission Statement, “The mission of High Point University is to deliver educational experiences that enlighten, challenge, and prepare students to lead lives of significance in complex global communities.”

Student Life

There are over 4,300 undergraduate students enrolled in High Point University, many of whom live on campus among the 19 residence halls. The University sponsors nearly 100 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the purple and white Panthers, led by Prowler the Panther, field teams in 7 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AAA competition. High Point University has been gaining national prominence via its Commencement speakers. Recently, former presidents George W Bush and William Clinton were hosted, and in 2014, the entire address by former Secretary of State Colin Powell was live streamed by CNN. This fits with the stated vision of the school: “The vision of High Point University is to be a nationally prominent, private institution recognized for the excellence of its academic programs, the depth of its values-based culture, the breadth of its inclusiveness, and the strength of its commitment to helping students lead lives of significance.”
