Hanover College is a private, 4-year school located in Hanover, IN, between Louisville and Cincinnati. The school was founded in 1827 by Presbyterian Reverend John Finley Crowe and is the oldest private college in Indiana. In 1843, the school’s charter was dissolved as the college was to move and reopen as Madison University in Madison, IN. Crowe, however, purchased the original campus and launched the Hanover Classical and Mathematical School later that year. By the mid-1844, Madison’s faculty and student body returned to Crowe’s school and the name was restored via renewed charter that December – meaning that John Finley Crowe founded Hanover College twice! The 650 acre campus overlooks the Ohio River and features traditional red brick collegiate Gothic with a stunning overlook of the River. Many open spaces and tree-lined pathways provide a pleasant environment on campus. Notable alumni include actor Woody Harrelson and Indiana Governor Mike Pence.

Academic Programs

Hanover College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees in over 30 fields. The College is made up of five Departments: Arts & Letters, Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Pre-Professional Programs. Noted for Teacher Education, the largest programs on campus are in Social Sciences and Physical Sciences. Per the Mission Statement, “Hanover College is a challenging and supportive community whose members take responsibility for lifelong inquiry, transformative learning and meaningful service. Hanover College is dedicated to creating a distinctive intellectual community within which students are challenged and nurtured to take responsibility for their learning and their lives and to develop their unique abilities to their highest levels. The achievement of these purposes requires personal commitment, a willingness to accept responsibility and discipline in exercising it. Academically, Hanover College emphasizes the importance of oral and written expression, intellectual curiosity and sound judgment.”

Student Life

Over 1,100 students attend Hanover College, most of whom live on campus among 10 residence halls and themed housing. The College sponsors over 60 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red and blue Panthers field teams in 10 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. New students ‘Hike to the Point’ as the earliest students did; all students anticipate the first snowfall for an annual snowball fight in the main quad. Student organizations paint the Spirit Rock outside the Horner Center. Students learn the Five Principles of Hanover College: Pursuit of Academic Excellence; Pursuit of Personal Excellence; Respect for one Another; Community Responsibility; and Accountability. This lines up with the stated Vision of the College: “Hanover College will be recognized… as a diverse learning community that excels in preparing students for professions and advanced study by combining a transformative liberal arts education with educational opportunities in distinctive professional disciplines. Through excellent undergraduate programs, meaningful co-curricular experiences, graduate programs in high demand fields, and accelerated pathways to graduate study, Hanover will be the college of choice… for all students who seek to make a difference in local and global communities.”
