Georgia Institute of Technology (commonly referred to as Georgia Tech), is a public research university located in Atlanta, Georgia. A leading research institute, Georgia Tech has been named seventh best public university in the nation and awards more engineering degrees to women than any other school in the United States. Established in 1888, Georgia Tech did not become coeducational until 1952. A 400-acre tree lined campus situated in the heart of Atlanta serves as the school’s main campus; as part of the University System of Georgia, satellite campuses are also located in Savannah, Georgia; Metz, France; Athlone, Ireland; Shanghai, China; an Singapore.
Academic Programs
The university is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1923 and awards both undergraduate and graduate-level degrees. Georgia Tech is made up of multiple colleges and schools, including the College of Architecture, College of Computing, College of Engineering, the Ivan Allen College, the Scheller College of Business, and the College of Sciences. More than 30 undergraduate majors and 50+ minors are offered in virtually every science- and engineering-related discipline as well as in the areas of business, public policy, sports, and pre-professional programs. Nearly 50 master’s degree programs and approximately 30 doctoral degrees are also offered in each of the fields listed above, as well as in international affairs, economics, and more.Georgia Tech’s undergraduate degree programs are designed to encourage students to learn through both seeing and doing and the school’s curriculum places strong emphasis on real-world projects in which professors assist their students in finding answers. Student Life
Georgia Tech has a total enrollment of over 23,000, including nearly 15,000 undergraduate students. Approximately 400 undergraduate student-led organizations and clubs thrive on campus, including more than 60 culturally diverse student groups and more than fifty Greek organizations. While most graduate students choose to live off of campus, Georgia Tech provides a variety of housing options to accommodate its students ranging from traditional residence halls to suit-style housing. Georgia Tech’s East Campus is largely populated by freshmen with approximately 98% of first-year students 45% of undergraduates choosing to live on campus as.As an NCAA Division I-A school, sports play a big role in campus life. Nicknamed the “Yellow Jackets” with “Buzz” serving as the school’s mascot, Georgia Tech features nearly 20 varsity teams that participate in the school sponsored intercollegiate athletics competitions. Approximately 20 intramural sports and over 40 sports club also exist, and Georgia Tech boasts one of the best outdoor recreation programs in the country which offer year-round action.
