George Washington University is a private research institution based out of Washington, D.C., just four blocks from the White House. George Washington University operates three campuses, the Foggy Bottom Campus, the Mount Vernon Campus, and the Virginia Science and Technology Campus. One of the largest private employers in D.C., the University has also been recognized multiple times as the #1 provider of Peace Corps Volunteers among medium-sized universities. A high ranking institution, George Washington University boasts many notable alumni, including several current members of the United States Congress, former SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro, former Senator J. William Fulbright, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, among others.

Academic Programs

George Washington University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1922. The University offers many undergraduate and graduate programs and is comprised of several different colleges and schools. These include the School of Business, the College of Professional Studies, the Columbian College of Arts & Sciences, The Corcoran School of Art & Design, the Elliot School of International Affairs, the School of Engineering & Applied Science, the School of Media & Public Affairs, the Milken Institute School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, the Graduate School of Education & Human Development, The Graduate School of Political Management, the GW Law School, the School of Medicine & Health Sciences, and the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy & Public Administration.

George Washington University is known as a top school when it comes to internship opportunities for students – a quality which has been called out by The Princeton Review in particular for a number of consecutive years. Due largely in part to its reputation and location, George Washington University offers students more than 12,000 internship opportunities and at least 70% of students have held internships or co-ops.

Student Life

George Washington University has a total enrollment figure of more than 26,000, including over 11,000 undergraduate students. Students hail from all fifty States and come from more than 125 foreign nations. Over two dozen residence halls provide student housing on both the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon Campuses. Each hall varies in terms of costs, hall amenities, and location and the University offers students a number of options including multi-person units, singles, studios, suites, and apartment-style rooms with kitchens. Students may choose their roommates through the University’s iHousing program and may also opt to live in affinity housing, which joins like-minded students who share the same passion, or in academic residential communities.

George Washington University has more than 450 registered student activity groups on campus and offers endless opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students to become involved and active, interacting with fellow students around a common cause, interest, or experience. An NCAA Division I-AAA school, the University’s varsity athletic teams compete in the Atlantic-10 Conference.
