Fisk University is a private, 4-year Historically Black University located in Nashville, TN. The school was founded in 1866, shortly after the resolution of the Civil War by the American Missionary Association for the education of freedmen. The school started adding black staff and faculty by 1900; in 1947 the University employed its first black president. In 1952, the school became the first predominately black college to earn a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. The 40 acre metropolitan campus is included on the National Register of Historic Places and features traditional red brick collegiate Gothic architecture as well as Jubilee Hall, a Victorian styled building which is the oldest structure on campus. Among notable alumni are WEB DuBois (the first African-American to earn a Harvard Ph.D.) and musician Jimmie Lunceford.

Academic Programs

Fisk University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates and Master’s degrees in over 15 fields. Noted for Music, the largest program on campus is in Psychology. The University is comprised of four schools: School of Humanities and Behavioral Social Sciences; School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Business; School of Graduate Studies. The University also sponsors joint programs with Vanderbilt University (5-year MBA and Masters-to-Ph.D.), Howard University (Pharmacy) and Rush Medical Center in Chicago (Nursing and Medical Technology). Per the Mission Statement, “Fisk University produces graduates from diverse backgrounds with the integrity and intellect required for substantive contributions to society. Our curriculum is grounded in the liberal arts. Our faculty and administrators emphasize the discovery and advancement of knowledge through research in the natural and social sciences, business and the humanities. We are committed to the success of scholars and leaders with global perspective.”

Student Life

There are over 800 undergraduate students enrolled in Fisk University, most of whom live on campus among four Living Learning Centers which are designated by class year and gender. The University sponsors over 50 clubs and student organizations. For the varsity athlete, the gold and blue Bulldogs field teams in 9 sports and participate in NAIA Division I competition. The D.E.T.A.I.L.S. represents Fisk’s core values. Our values reflect our overall ethical and moral engagement.
