Eastern Connecticut State University is a public, coeducational liberal arts university located in Willimantic, Connecticut. Established in 1889, Eastern Connecticut State University is the second-oldest campus within the Connecticut State University System and the third oldest public university in the state of Connecticut. The University began as the Willimantic State Normal School which was founded for the original purpose of training teachers. Today, Eastern Connecticut State University is ranked as one of the best colleges in the North by the U.S. News & World Report and was named one of the Best Regional Colleges in the northeast by The Princeton Review.

Academic Programs

Eastern Connecticut State University’s mission is to “provide high quality undergraduate and select graduate programs to a diverse population of talented students.” The school’s mission statement continues, saying, “The University is committed to serving the state of Connecticut and the nation by preparing its students for their future personal, professional and public roles, as leaders in both their communities and professional fields.” Eastern Connecticut State University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and has been so since 1958.

Eastern Connecticut State University is divided into two schools, the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education & Professional Studies, and offers graduate and adult degree programs through its Office of Continued Studies & Enhanced Learning and the Graduate Division. Majors offered at Eastern Connecticut State University include Accounting; Biochemistry; Biology; Business Administration; Business Information Systems; Communication; Computer Science; Education; Economics; English; Environmental Earth Science; General Studies; Health Sciences; History; History and Social Sciences; Individualized Major; Labor Relations and Human Resource Management; Mathematics; Music; Physical Education; Political Science; Psychology; Secondary Education Certification; Social Work; Sociology; Spanish; Sport and Leisure Management; Theatre; Visual Art; and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Student Life

Eastern Connecticut State University has a total enrollment figure of more than 5,000, the majority of whom are undergraduate students. Representatives from more than 20 states and 60 foreign countries come to study at Eastern Connecticut State University, including nations such as Argentina, Bangladesh, Cape Verde, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, and Haiti. The majority of first-year students and approximately 60% of all full-time undergraduates choose to live on-campus and the University’s housing is separated into first-year and upperclassman halls.

Eastern Connecticut State University is situated on a 182 acre campus, about 30 minutes away from Hartford, Connecticut and midway between New York City and Boston. More than 80 student organizations are recognized by Eastern Connecticut State University, including athletic, cultural, artistic, political, and communication clubs. The Campus Activity Board also sponsors several campus events including movies, concerts, and trips. As an NCAA Division III school, Eastern Connecticut State University varsity teams compete in the Little East Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.
