Drexel University is a private research university located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Established in 1881 by the legendary financier and philanthropist, Anthony J. Drexel, the original mission of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (as it was then known) was to provide educational opportunities for men and women of all backgrounds in the “practical arts and sciences”. In 1936 the school became the Drexel Institute of Technology and in 1970 achieved university status, adopting its current name. Drexel University operates three Philadelphia campuses, the University City Main Campus, the Center City Hahnemann Campus which includes the Hahnemann University Hospital, and the Queen Lane College of Medicine Campus.
Academic Programs
Drexel University’s mission as an “academically comprehensive and globally engaged urban research university,” is to fulfill its founders vision of ”preparing each new generation of students for productive professional and civic lives while also focusing our collective expertise on solving society’s greatest problems” and to provide “every student with a valuable, rigorous, experiential, technology-infused education, enriched by the nation’s premier co-operative education program.” Drexel University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1927.Drexel University offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate-level degree programs through its several colleges and schools, which include the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems; the LeBow College of Business which includes the School of Economics; the College of Computing & Informatics; the School of Education; the College of Engineering; the Close School of Entrepreneurship; the Center for Hospitality and Sport Management; the Kline School of Law; the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design; the College of Medicine; the College of Nursing and Health Professions; the Goodwin College of Professional Studies; the Dornsife School of Public Health; Drexel’s Graduate College; and the Pennoni Honors College.
Student Life
Drexel University has a total enrollment figure of well over 25,000 students, including more than 16,000 undergraduates. Drexel University’s City Campus in Philadelphia serves as the University’s main campus and is its oldest and largest with 77 acres. First-year students, unless living with a parent or legal guardian, are required to reside on campus in one of the University’s several residence halls. Sophomores are also required to live in either University housing, University-approved housing, or in University-affiliated housing. Drexel University also offers several residential learning communities which are designed to unite students of similar majors, passions, or backgrounds; past living learning communities have included Business, Computing and Informatics, Engineering, Entrepreneurship, Honors, Liberty Scholars, Media Arts & Design, and Nursing and Health Professions.More than 300 student organizations are recognized by Drexel University, including several Greek Life fraternities and sororities. As an NCAA Division I-AAA school, Drexel University sponsors several varsity athletic teams which compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. Located just west of the Schuylkill River, students enjoy all the educational, career, recreational, and cultural events and opportunities that the historic and vibrant city of Philadelphia.
