Drew University is a private, coeducational institution located in Madison, New Jersey. Established in 1867, the University originally began as a theological seminary founded by Daniel Drew for the purpose of educating ministers for the Methodist church. The seminary eventually expanded and began offering an undergraduate liberal arts curriculum in the late 1920s followed by graduate studies in the 1950s. Located on a 186 acre campus, Drew University is situated in the small, but thriving town of Madison, not far from New York City with all of its professional, cultural, and recreational opportunities. Among Drew University’s notable distinctions, the University is a member of Phi Beta Kappa – the oldest, most respected and one of the most exclusive undergraduate honors societies in the nation.

Academic Programs

Drew University’s mission is to “offer its diverse community of learners a challenging and individualized education shaped by a deep-rooted culture of mentoring, thoughtful engagement with the world beyond its campus, and a steadfast commitment to lifelong cultivation of the whole person.” The University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been so since 1932.

Drew University is comprised of two schools and a college, the College of Liberal Arts which awards the Bachelor of Arts in more than 25 disciplines, the Drew Theological School, and the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies, each of which awards Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees. In addition to the many majors offered through Drew University’s Liberal Arts College, several minors and combined degree programs are also available as well as a number of pre-professional programs which are designed to be paired with a major. Students at Drew University are given the opportunity to participate in real-world research projects as well in hands-on city semesters, internships and international study opportunities.

Student Life

Drew University has a total enrollment figure of more than 2,000, including nearly 1,500 undergraduate students. On-campus student housing is offered to students from all three schools through the University’s several residence halls which are divided into first-year halls, upperclass halls, and Graduate/Theological student halls. Several Theme Housing options also exist, allowing students of a particular interest or “theme” to live together in a small community.

Drew University recognizes several active student-run clubs and organizations, including a vibrant Greek life presence. These and other campus events and activities cater to a wide range of professional and personal interests and allow students to interact with one another and with faculty members outside of the classroom and provide opportunities to grow and develop valuable leadership qualities and skills. As an NCAA Division III school, Drew University is a member of the Landmark Conference and fields a number of varsity sports including basketball, cross country, equestrian, fencing, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, baseball, field hockey, and softball.
