Ranked as a top national liberal arts college by U.S. News & World Report (#2 in Indiana, after Notre Dame), DePauw University is a small private institution in Greencastle, IN. Founded in 1837, DePauw is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was originally named after Francis Asbury, the first American bishop of the church; in 1884 it was renamed for Washington C. DePauw, a philanthropist who made enormous financial contributions to the university. Today, DePauw is known for their excellent general undergraduate education, which is designed for flexibility and exploration.

Academic Programs

As a fairly traditional liberal arts institution, DePauw’s curriculum is focused on the breadth and depth of the humanities, sciences, and arts, preparing students for the professions by giving them a fully-rounded education. In the liberal arts tradition, class sizes are kept small, and a 10:1 student/faculty ratio makes mentorship and cooperation possible; class sizes in music are even smaller, with a 5:1 ratio for close personal coaching and guidance. All courses are taught by faculty members, with no shuffling the burden off to graduate assistants.

One of DePauw’s most notable divisions is the School of Music, one of the oldest in the nation since its founding in 1884. Students in music can earn a bachelor’s degree or one of two minors, Applied Music and Jazz Studies. Student excellence also manifests in DePauw’s honors programs and student research, including the Science Research Fellows, Management Fellows, Environmental Fellows, and several other research initiatives. DePauw also has a long reputation as early adopters of wireless technology and educational technology.

Student Life

DePauw’s 2200 students include 5% more women than men, and 20% of students belong to a minority group. The student body is accomplished, meeting high acceptance standards and putting up big numbers during their college career; a 93% retention rate distinguishes DePauw’s students support, while an 81% four-year graduation rate is far above national average. More than 80% of DePauw students participate in study abroad programs.

Greek life is a very important part of DePauw’s culture, having begun as far back as 1845. The Princeton Review ranks DePauw as the #1 college for Greek life, and U.S. News & World Report ranks DePauw at #3 for men and #4 for women, referring to the proportion of students involved in a fraternity or sorority. Not coincidentally, DePauw has been named one of the top party schools in the US, but DePauw’s reputation for community outreach and service matches their reputation for a good time, with DePauw’s community service, spiritual life, and social justice organizations meeting needs for the Greencastle area and beyond.
