Clemson University, of Clemson, South Carolina, is a public research university and South Carolina’s highest-ranked national university. Founded in 1889 by Thomas Green Clemson, the school formally opened its doors in July of 1893 as an all-male military school. In 1955 the school was changed to ‘civilian’ status and became co-educational; it was not until 1964 that the college was renamed Clemson University in recognition of its expanded academic offerings and research pursuits. Today Clemson is listed in the top-25 public universities with a reputation for excellence and is one of the most selective among public research institutions. Clemson is committed to providing hands-on instruction to its students – in the lab, arts, and field – and boasts a number of notable alumni including four Fulbright Scholars, two Rhodes Scholar Finalists, and eleven NSF Graduate Research Fellows.

Academic Programs

The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is made up of several colleges and schools, including: the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; College of Health, Education and Human Development; College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities; Eugene T. Moor School of Education; College of Business and Behavioral Science; and the College of Engineering and Science. More than 80 majors and 75-plus minors are offered along with over 110 graduate degree programs.

Clemson’s academic programs purposefully lay the groundwork for innovative research and students are given real-world experiences that they can then carry forward into their careers. Students have access to over 1.5 million items in the Clemson Library System as well as research facilities and economic development hubs that the university operates in locations throughout the state of South Carolina. Each year more than 1,000 students participate in study abroad in programs offered across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America.

Student Life

Nearly 22,000 students are currently enrolled at Clemson, including more than 17,000 undergraduates. Clemson’s campus is both vibrant and friendly – one of the campus traditions revolves around Move-In Day, when university employees and current students welcome new students by helping to carry their luggage and belongings to residence halls. Clemson offers more than 25 residence halls and on-campus apartments as well as over a dozen dining locations with 400+ Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the campus.

There are plenty activities, recreations, and groups for students to participate in – Clemson’s campus is home to more than 400 student organizations; at least six student-run media organizations; 50+ club sports; and more than a dozen intramural sports. The campus, located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, borders the 900+ shoreline of Hartwell Lake, offering opportunities for swimming, boating, skiing, and sailing. With the mountains less than an hour away, active students can also enjoy pastimes such as canoeing, kayaking, white-water rafting, hiking, camping, snow skiing, trout fishing, and more.
