Central Connecticut State University is a regional, comprehensive public university located in New Britain, Connecticut, dedicated to the liberal arts and sciences and to education for the professions. Established in 1849, Central Connecticut State University is the oldest publically supported institution for higher education in the state of Connecticut. Central Connecticut State University is also the largest of the four comprehensive universities which make up the Connecticut State University System, featuring a welcoming and attractive 165 acre campus with 40 buildings and state-of-the-art technologies. Central Connecticut State University has been named a Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Institution on account of the University’s many community engagement activities.
Academic Programs
Central Connecticut State University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and has been so since 1947. The University’s mission is to be a “community of learners dedicated to teaching and scholarship that emphasizes development and application of knowledge and ideas through research and outreach activities, and prepares students to be thoughtful, responsible and successful citizens.” Central Connecticut State University offers a broad range of degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels and is made up of several schools and a college, including: School of Business; School of Education & Professional Studies; School of Graduate Studies; School of Science, Engineering & Technology; and the Carol Ammon College of Liberal Arts & Sociel Sciences.Central Connecticut State University offers approximately 100 majors in more than 80 fields of study as well as several special programs which both enrich and further diversify students’ educational opportunities. Central Connecticut State University’s undergraduate curriculum has been nationally recognized for its excellence by the Association of American Colleges and Universities. More than 40 academic fields of graduate study are also offered, culminating in Master of Arts, Master of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, or a Doctor of Education.
Student Life
More than 12,000 students are enrolled at Central Connecticut State University, including nearly 10,000 undergraduates. Central Connecticut State University’s student body is uniquely diverse, with approximately 20% of students coming from a traditional minority heritage. The student body is split nearly in half between male and female students, with men slightly outnumbering women. Central Connecticut State University offers student housing in one of their several residence halls and approximately 23% of students choose to live on campus. Central Connecticut State University’s campus is located in a neighborhood on the northern edge of New Britain and is a mere fifteen minutes away from the state capital of Hartford and approximately two hours from both New York City and Boston.Central Connecticut State University is an NCAA Division I-AA school and boasts several varsity teams which compete in the Northeast Conference. Central Connecticut State University’s men’s basketball, baseball, football, and golf teams as well as the women’s soccer teams have frequently been crowned champions in the Northeast Conference. The University also boasts several club and intramural sports team and students are free to make use of Central Connecticut State University’s state-of-the-art fitness center, swimming pool, and modern exercise equipment.
