Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pittsburgh, PA was founded in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as Carnegie Technical Schools. The university became the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912 and in 1967, it merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research to form Carnegie Mellon University. This private 4-year school is set on 143 acres just 3 miles from downtown; the campus features a blend of architectural styles. A large grassy area called “the Cut” is central to the campus and is intersected by another open space called “the Mall” which completes the quad. The campus has been featured in several major films. Notable alumni include James Gosling (inventor of Java), Andy Warhol and astronauts Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14) and Judith Resnik (Space Shuttle Challenger).

Academic Programs

Carnegie Mellon University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, posy-baccalaureate certificates, Master’s Degrees, post-masters certificates and Doctorates. The school has recognition for its Art & Design and Music programs; the largest programs on campus are Engineering and Computer Sciences. The University is comprised of seven colleges and independent schools: the College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mellon College of Science, Tepper School of Business, H. John Heinz III College and the School of Computer Science. Per the Mission Statement, the school desires “To create a transformative educational experience for students focused on deep disciplinary knowledge; problem solving; leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; and personal health and well-being. To cultivate a transformative university community committed to (a) attracting and retaining diverse, world-class talent; (b) creating a collaborative environment open to the free exchange of ideas, where research, creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship can flourish; and (c) ensuring individuals can achieve their full potential. To impact society in a transformative way — regionally, nationally, and globally — by engaging with partners outside the traditional borders of the university campus.”

Student Life

Carnegie Mellon has approximately 6000 undergraduate students on campus. Residence halls vary from traditional dormitories to apartments and special interest housing and there are many student-run organizations and clubs including club sports and intramurals available. For the varsity athlete, the Cardinal, Black, Gray and White Tartans field teams in 8 sports and participate in NCAA Division III competition. One of the few schools to offer a degree program in bagpipes, the Carnegie Mellon Kiltie Band of pipes and drums plays at all home football games. While on campus, students learn the Vision of the school: “Carnegie Mellon University will have a transformative impact on society through continual innovation in education, research, creativity, and entrepreneurship.” This is accomplished by adhering to the stated Core Values of: Honesty and Good Faith; Professional Conduct of Work; Mutual Trust and Respect and Fairness and Exemplary Behavior – all contained within the simple quote by Andrew Carnegie, “My heart is in the work.”
