Butler University in Indianapolis was founded in 1855 as the North Western Christian University by Ovid Butler (who provided the land for the campus). In 1875 it was renamed for its founder and has kept that name ever since. Founded by members of the Christian Church, the school was never under direct control of the church. Just 5 miles from downtown Indianapolis, the 295 acre campus lies in the heart of Indy – a planned city with original boundaries of 1 square mile. Health insurer Anthem and Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly call Indy home; as do the NFL Colts, NBA Pacers and WNBA Fever. Of course, it is home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of the most famous racetracks in the world.

Academic Programs

Butler University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Associates degrees, Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in 60 majors. The 6 colleges that comprise Butler are the College of Business, College of Communication, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Jordan College of the Arts. Butler University has received special recognition for their Pharmacy, Teacher Education, Theatre, Music and Dance programs; although the largest program is Business (Marketing and Accounting/Finance). Currently, Butler has no online degree programs available. Butler’s concise Mission statement is “to provide the highest quality of liberal and professional education and to integrate the liberal arts with professional education, by creating and fostering a stimulating intellectual community built upon interactive dialogue and inquiry among students, faculty and staff.” Butler also has an active ‘semester abroad’ program that is among the highest rated among universities.

Student Life

Campus life is busy for the 4,900 students in attendance. With a myriad of student clubs based on interest, background or field of study, there is always somewhere to get involved. The campus residence options range from typical dormitories and apartments to themed communities and a robust Greek presence (approximately 35% of all undergrads join fraternities or sororities). The blue and white Butler Bulldogs participate in 10 sports in NCAA Division I competition (Butler is known for their basketball teams) as well as Intramurals and club sports. Butler students learn that the University’s global vision is expressed by the four core values: the Appreciation of Diversity and Similarity; the Excitement of Teaching, Learning, and Mentoring; the Challenge of Integrated Practice and Collaboration and the Strength of Integrity and Responsibility. To bring this about, Butler makes 7 Commitments: high-quality teaching; serving not only the local community, but a global community of students; combining academic and extra-curricular experiences for a well-rounded education; recruiting/retaining scholars and professionals for excellence in instruction; maintaining a sensitivity to other cultures; providing opportunities for leadership in the local area and providing lifelong support to the alumni.
