Founded in 1846, Bucknell University is a small liberal arts institution in Lewisburg, PA. Recognized as a “Hidden Ivy” or “Little Ivy” – an informal set of small, less-famous liberal arts institutions with quality to rival the Ivy League – Bucknell is regularly ranked at the top of national liberal arts universities by publications like U.S. News & World Report and Forbes. Bucknell’s history begins with the establishment of two schools, one male, one female, by the White Deer Valley Baptist Church, as well as a college and seminary. Bucknell take pride in diversity of background and viewpoints, with the broad-mindedness of the traditional liberal arts and the practical focus of modern professional education.

Academic Programs

While Bucknell has its roots in the traditional liberal arts, their academic programs go well beyond those bounds, with more than 50 majors and even more minors. Bucknell puts a priority on personalized education and grounding all of its majors in the liberal arts, so that students get a solid, well-rounded education that can lead them into their professions with critical and analytical skills, whether those professions are in the sciences or humanities. Majors run the gamut from Art History to Engineering, and Bucknell’s College of Engineering and School of Management are both highly regarded, top-ranked professional schools.

Bucknell’s academic programs are highly student-centered, with the close personal attention and guidance that the liberal arts model is known for. With a 9:1 student/teacher ratio, and all classes taught by faculty (no graduate assistants), Bucknell assures students that they will be cared for by faculty. That special attention pays off; according to PayScale, Bucknell graduates have the third-highest median earnings of any small liberal arts school in its class, and 96% of graduates report finding work in their field, or acceptance into graduate school, within nine months of graduating.
