Six miles west of Boston, MA is a suburb called Chestnut Hill, home of Boston College. This private, 4-year school had a difficult start, opening twice before finally receiving a Charter in March of 1863. The second closing of the school in 1861 was directly related to the outbreak of the Civil War. Once founded, Boston College became the second Jesuit institution of higher learning in Massachusetts and the first located in the Boston area. The 175 acre main campus boasts collegiate gothic architecture; the focal point is Gasson Hall with its tall clock and bell tower. Alumni include many local and national political figures, including former Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O’Neill and Secretary of State John F Kerry as well as former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie.

Academic Programs

Boston College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in 58 majors. BC is noted for Law, Psychology, Nursing and Teacher Education; the largest programs are in Economics and Business fields. Internships and ‘study abroad’ programs are available. BC is comprised of nine schools and colleges: Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Carroll School of Management, Lynch School of Education, Connell School of Nursing, Graduate School of Social Work, Law School, School of Theology and Ministry, Woods College of Advancing Studies. BC’s Mission specifies the school is “committed to leading its students on a comprehensive journey of discovery—one that integrates their intellectual, personal, ethical, and religious formation. Inspiration for Boston College’s academic and societal mission is drawn from the University’s distinctive religious and intellectual heritage. As a Jesuit, Catholic University, Boston College is rooted in a world view that calls us to learn, to search for truth, and to live in service to others. To fulfill that mission, we welcome and embrace the contributions of a diverse student body from many faith traditions.”

Student Life

The student body at Boston College is nearly 10,000 strong. On campus housing offers 29 residence halls in various styles and types. The school offers about 300 student-run clubs and organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the maroon and gold BC Eagles field teams in 17 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AA competition. The athletic program at BC has a rich history of success and national exposure throughout football season in particular. BC’s location, in close proximity to historic Boston, affords students a unique opportunity to experience American history where it occurred. The school’s vision “builds upon its traditions. It seeks to be the national leader in the liberal arts; to fulfill its Jesuit, Catholic mission of faith and service; to continue to develop model programs to support students in their formation; and to seek solutions—as researchers, educators, leaders, and caregivers—that directly address the world’s most urgent problems.”
