Albion College is a private four-year college of the liberal arts located in Albion, Michigan and historically related to the United Methodist Church. Albion College was established in 1835 for original the purpose of educating the children of Native Americans and settlers in the area. The school was chartered by the Michigan Territorial Legislature due to the efforts of early Methodist settlers. Albion College was one of the first schools in the Midwest to introduce coeducation; in 1850 the Albion Female Collegiate Institute was founded and controlled by its counterpart, the Wesleyan Seminary Corporation. By 1857 the two schools merged, forming the Wesleyan Seminary and Female College at Albion and just a few years later in 1861, the college was authorized by state legislature to award four-year college degrees to both men and women.

Academic Programs

Albion College’s vision is to be “nationally recognized for its academic excellence in the liberal arts tradition, a learning-centered commitment, and a future-oriented perspective.” Utilizing a “hands-on” approach, Albion College endeavors to prepare students to “anticipate, solve, and prevent problems in order to improve the human and global condition” immersing “students in the creation and processing of knowledge, and graduates skilled architects of societal change, active citizens, and future leaders.” Albion College’s mission is to be “learning-centered and recognize that valuable learning takes place in and outside the classroom, on and off campus.”

Albion College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1915. Two types of degrees are awarded, a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts, with nearly 50 majors, concentrations and pre-professional programs from which to choose. These programs include: Accounting; Anthropology; Art; Biochemistry; Biology; Business and Organizations; Chemistry; Communication Studies; Economics and Management; Education; English; Environmental Science; Finance; Geological Sciences; History; Human Services; International Studies; Law, Justice, and Society; Mathematics and Computer Science; Music; Neuroscience; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science; Psychological Science; Religious Studies; Sociology; Sustainability and the Environment; Theatre; and Women’s and Gender Studies.
