Southwest University at El Paso is dedicated to working with committed students seeking to advance or launch their careers by earning a degree. This young university was established in 1999 to help students with limited English proficiency and those who hadn’t graduated from high school. In 2012, the college became a university but still continues to offer a supportive learning environment for a diverse student population.
The College of Business is an educational member of the IACBE and offers accelerated associate’s and bachelor’s level degree programs. The entire student body population is slightly over 1,500, and students learn in small classes with an average of 20 students or less. The majority of students are first-generation college students, so the small class size ensures students feel connected to their professors and receive the assistance they need. The majority of students qualify for financial aid, making the leap to attend college a bit easier.
Education
The CoB offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Management and Accounting Systems, which can be completed in just over one year and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, which takes just three years from start to finish. All classes are offered in a condensed six-week format, and students must be enrolled in a minimum of two courses each session to be classified as a full-time student.
The scope of the associate’s degree curriculum extends beyond business management and accounting principles to include courses in business law, communications, economics, and finance. Technology is emphasized throughout this program with courses in computer programming, graphic design, Quick Books software, and Excel spreadsheet design. These skills will prepare students to succeed in entry-level office careers. The Bachelor of Business Management features courses in Accounting Systems, Business Logistics, Entrepreneurship, Social Media Advertising, and Quality Management. Professors use real business reports and scenarios in the classroom. Students will also learn soft skills such as communication strategies, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. Graduates of this degree will be prepared for junior level management positions.
Student Life
New students are required to attend an orientation to ease the transition from high school into college. Students are encouraged to attend an individual career counseling appointment early on to discuss their personal goals. Dedicated career placement specialists work towards matching students with career opportunities in their field of study. Many of these placements come through SU’s partnership with the Upper Rio Grande Workforce Development Board. Tuition discounts are also offered through the URGWDB to help job seekers advance their skills. Alumni are eligible for career services. Business students will complete a 180-hour externship in an office setting to gain real-world work experience. Some of the other resources available to students include financial counseling, tutoring, and assistance with locating transportation and childcare.
Online Programs
Students may learn from anywhere in the world at any time through the distance learning program at SU. All on-campus programs are also offered online. Discussion boards help students engage with their classmates. Through research projects, students will develop professional writing and analytical skills.
