Student Life

Shepherd University is committed to cultivating leaders by creating opportunities for leadership development. Much of this growth happens through academic programs, internships, volunteering, and quality interaction with faculty. Research affirms that student leadership development occurs most often outside the classroom through involvement in student activities, targeted leadership programs, community service projects, and on-campus employment. One excellent opportunity at Shepherd is the Student Life Council. The SLC is responsible for reviewing and recommending campus-wide student life policies to the President’s Executive Staff and other groups that establish procedures. It also establishes committees to review policies and maintains permanent subcommittees, including Leadership Conference at Shepherd, Family Day, Student Recognition Day, the Performing Arts Series at Shepherd, and Program Board. Student Life Council’s membership includes the SGA president, Program Board president, six students elected at-large, and two master’s students recommended by the Dean of the Graduate School.

Online Programs

Shepherd University currently offers a 100% online Teaching Certification program. Course providers estimate distance learners will commit two to three hours each day to the program’s coursework. The College also provides online students with professional development courses in Education. Shepherd University began offering the EDPD (Professional Development in Education) program in 2006. Some 500 educators avail themselves annually of these graduate-level courses to become a re-certified teacher.
