In 2014, the business school at Old Dominion University became the Strome College of Business thanks to the generous gifts from Mark and Tammy Strome of the Strome Family Foundation. This AACSB-accredited school values community, diversity, excellence, ethics, global orientation, leadership, and social responsibility. They recently have intertwined entrepreneurship throughout all of the business curricula and focus on engagement, exploration, and active learning to accelerate success. There are just under 3,500 business students enrolled and pursuing degrees.

Education

There are almost 20 undergraduate degrees offered, including Accounting, Digital Marketing, E-Business and E-Commerce, International Business, Professional Sales, Business Analytics, Real Estate, and Finance. Graduate students can pursue a Masters in Accounting, Economics, Maritime Trade & Supply Chain Management, Business Administration (MBA), and Public Administration (MPA). There are also Doctoral degrees in Business Administration, Public Administration & Policy, and Strategic Management.

Many recognized and award-winning faculty, with work appearing in major publications, grace the halls of The Strome College of Business. Jong Park, Associate Professor of Accounting, has a recent well-known paper published in the Journal of Accounting and Economics entitled, “Gender Differences in Financial Reporting Decision Making: Evidence from Accounting Conservatism.”

Student Life

This College of Business places a high value on achieving community relationships, community service, and community influence. One unique advantage is that local business owners and executives will visit classrooms, give lectures, and share their experience. Through the Executive Mentor Program, the Tanner Fellows Program, and the Strome Partners Program, professional businessmen and women from the community, alumni, and not-for-profit organizations meet with, mentor, and build relationships with the business students. Career Development Services, the Go Pro Series, and the Fitting Room Series all assist students in professional training, internship placement, career path knowledge, networking, and the interview process.

Business student organizations such as the American Marketing Association, Beta Alpha Psi, Society for Human Resource Management, and the MBA Association help students build relationships and grow in their educational life experience. Anyone who desires to lead in their organization can attend the one-day Leadership Academy for training. Active duty and veteran students can volunteer to become a Military Ambassador and answer questions that prospective military students may have.

The Dean’s Research Seminar exists to give doctoral students presentation experience for their research. The Strome Entrepreneurial Center provides opportunities for Strome faculty, staff, and students to work together in creating ideas for new business ventures. The Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship serves not only the faculty, staff, and students of Strome but the entire university and the surrounding areas.

Online Programs

The Strome College of Business, a pioneer and national leader in distance learning, places great importance on offering over 20 flexible, online degree programs for students who cannot attend classes in person. The online Bachelor’s programs include Accounting, Management, Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, and Finance. Online Masters programs include Business Administration, Engineering Management, Public Administration, and Sport Management. There are also two online doctorate degrees in Human Resource Training and Public Administration & Policy.
