Northeastern State University was originally founded as the Cherokee National Female Seminary in 1846, and it still embraces the Cherokee heritage through many academic projects focused on Native American studies. The main campus is located in Tahlequah, and regional satellite campuses are located in Muskogee and Broken Arrow. NSU claims to have the second-lowest tuition out of all colleges in Oklahoma, and $36 million in scholarships and grants are awarded annually. The student body population is comprised of approximately 25% of Native American students, representing 30 different nations. Many Native American majors and minors are offered. Some courses are even taught in Cherokee for native speakers. Northeastern State University is the home of many admirable ACBSP accredited business degrees offered through the College of Business and Technology.

Community-based projects are seamlessly interwoven into the curriculum to provide students opportunities to gain practical experience. Experiential projects include conducting a substantial live negotiation, writing business proposals, creating websites for local businesses. Accounting students help low income and elderly members in the community prepare their taxes through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Competitions such as the Hilti USA Innovation Challenge bring out the competitive edge in students. Students work in teams of five to solve real logistics problems, and must submit a prototype, report, or video presentation.
