Education
Bachelors degree students can major in Business Administration, Organizational Management, Marketing, or Management. The BBA concentrations are in Accounting and Finance. The Organizational Management degree is geared around working adults who can attend classes in the evenings or on weekends. Undergraduate students have to conduct a research thesis paper as a required capstone project. They have the privilege of presenting their research to students in a variety of degree programs across the University. Graduate students can pursue a Masters in Business Administration degree.
A degree of higher education can carry a financial burden. There are numerous scholarships to help ease the burden, including the Palmetto Fellow Scholarship, Claflin Honors College Scholarships, the Rhodes Scholarship, and the S.C. HOPE Scholarship. Other scholarships can be found based on race, gender, a field of study, accomplishments, and more. Graduates who have completed a study abroad trip of some sort tend to elevate their resumes and are given greater responsibilities by employers. Claflin offers international faculty-led, student exchange, short-term, and long-term trips and global internships to places like London, India, Puerto Rico, and many more destinations.
Student Life
Student organizations like ENACTUS, American Marketing Association, Phi Beta Lambda, Delta Mu Delta Honor Society, National Association of Black Accountants, Dean’s Council, and Sigma Nau Tau exist specifically for business students. These groups build leadership skills, build upon the classroom learning, and provide opportunities to experience real-world business situations.
Another great way to acquire experiential learning is through internships with companies like Wells Fargo, The United States Department of Energy, BMW, and Santee Cooper. There are also opportunities to visit corporations and learn, first-hand, how the business is managed and operated. The Executive Lecture Series, led by experienced and essential leaders in companies and the community, provides testimony and information concerning today’s issues in business. This event is a great opportunity for every student to network and begin a mentorship relationship. Another resource for students is the Center for Entrepreneurship, where they can enter into competitions presenting new business ideas. The Center also helps students and people in the surrounding community create, develop, and produce innovative ventures.
