The mission of the School of Business at Alcorn State University is to “prepare graduates who will be well-rounded future leaders of high character, who will be competitive in the global marketplace of the 21st century.” This goal is met through the development of positive interpersonal and leadership skills, preparing students for entry-level positions in a variety of business-related fields, developing a true understanding of economics, and providing a strong foundation for future studies or advanced positions within their chosen career path.

Education

The undergraduate options of the School of Business are Accounting or Business Administration. The Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting is focused on preparing students for public or managerial accounting roles. Topics covered within the coursework include cost accounting, income tax accounting, accounting information systems, and more. Graduates of this program are well-prepared to sit for the CPA exam. The Bachelor’s of Business Administration covers major areas of business, such as communications, technology, and critical thinking. Students can choose from a traditional on-campus format or opt to take their courses digitally through the online program.

The Master’s of Business Administration at ASU is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs. This degree is 36 credits in length and is typically completed in a year in a half to two years. Students will sharpen their skills in the areas of finance, marketing, management, and accounting through this exceptional program.

Student Life

Students at both the undergraduate and graduate level are encouraged to participate in internships and co-ops. These experiential learning opportunities also often connect with Study Abroad programs. The Study Abroad experience lasts a minimum of one semester and also often includes components like cultural immersion, service learning, or language enhancement. The Office of Global Programs also hosts the Friendship Family Program. The FFP connects new international students with local families in the Mississippi area. Host families help students as they navigate college life and adjust to being in the United States. Participants are often a part of informal dinners, holiday celebrations, and family outings.

Freshmen students at Alcorn State take part in the First-Year Experience, which carries the support of student orientation throughout the year. Workshops included within the program build leadership skills, time-management skills, study habits, and more. Students are assigned advisors who give them personalized guidance on many topics like choosing classes, declaring a major, and evaluating individual strengths and weaknesses as it pertains to choosing a career.

There are over 40 organizations like the student newspaper, student government, music, and theatre groups, and a student-run radio station that make campus life busy and interesting.

Online Programs

The Office of Online Education walks online students through every step of earning their degree. Among the programs offered is a Bachelor’s of Arts in Business Administration. This well-rounded program includes courses such as Business Statistics, Entrepreneurship, Financial Management, and Principles of Marketing.
