Alabama State University is a public, historically black university that has been educating students since 1867. ASU is a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and works to support students from diverse backgrounds as they reach their academic, personal, and career goals. In fact, the mission of the University is to be “a comprehensive, diverse student-centered public HBCU committed to global excellence in teaching, research, and service.” The campus is located in Montgomery, Alabama, which gives students a unique opportunity to experience the city and appreciate the rich history that led the civil rights movement. The College of Business has many outreach programs that give added programming and service-learning opportunities. Because of this connection there is a strong relationship with local high schools, corporate and small business organizations, government agencies, and the greater Montgomery community.

Education

The Alabama State College of Business Administration is accredited by the ACBSP and focuses on three areas of business education, including Accounting & Finance, Business Administration, and Computer Information Systems. All programs have a distinct global focus and include opportunities for local internships to build both relationships and your resume. Bachelor’s of Science can be earned in Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, or Computer Information Systems. A one-year Master’s of Accountancy is also available. This program covers many fundamental aspects of business with a deeper focus. A few of the core topics covered are managerial cost/risk analysis, advanced financial reporting, governmental accounting, and advanced auditing. Students can also extend their learning and put ideas into action by working with the Small Business and Development Center. This center provides many essential tools for success like personalized business advising, educational training, and more.

Student Life

The Office of Student Life at ASU strives to support students in all aspects of their college journey. They currently offer seven targeted areas of support that cover a wide range of the student experience from academic support to leadership opportunities. There are over 50 student clubs and organizations, such as Collegiate 100, International Student Association, National Association of Black Accountants, and Empowered Mentoring. The Student Center is a great place to hang out with a movie theatre, food court, cyber cafe, and more. The SC also conveniently houses the offices for Financial Aid, Admissions, Student Accounts, and Records and Registration. On-campus recreational activities help keep students active with intramural sports teams, a track, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a swimming pool.

There are many time-honored traditions that students look forward to each year, like Ole’ Bama State Spirit, Turkey Day Classic, Magic City Classic, Founders Day, and Parent’ s/Honors Day. There are more than ten resident halls available for students who choose to live on campus. Four are designed to meet the needs of Freshman students while eight others accommodate upper-classmen. Students can also add meal plans to their tuition for an all-inclusive living and learning experience. The Wellness Matters program is a unique program that supports freshmen through their first year in the areas of academic support, career development, physical and emotional health, and financial success.
