Located 75 miles southwest of Charlotte, NC is the small town of Spartansburg, SC which is home to Wofford College. This 4-year private college, founded in 1854 sits on 175 acres of history. Founded before the Civil War, it is one of very few colleges to remain at its original location. The 48 building campus is on the National Register of Historic Places and the entire campus was designated as an arboretum; including membership in the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta. Wofford College was founded by Methodist minister, Rev. Benjamin Wofford who wanted to create a college for “literary, classical, and scientific education in my native district of Spartanburg.” Notable alumni of the school include Carolina Panthers founder and owner Jerry Richardson and ESPN reporter Wendy Nix.

Academic Programs

Wofford College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s Degrees in 25 majors. The largest programs on campus are in Business and Biology and Biomedical fields. Currently, there are no online degree programs available. Woffford provides for an opportunity to expand the learning experience beyond the classroom and chosen field of study. The Interim program is designed to give students opportunities for new experiences outside the realm of traditional academics and allows students to become involved in areas outside their academic majors. Interims generally fall into one of four categories. In the most common type, students enroll in faculty-proposed projects on campus. These projects range from participation in theatre to pottery, knitting and short story writing. The second category is supervised internships; the third category is independent research projects under faculty supervision and fourth is sponsored, faculty-led travel projects. “During Interim, the ordinary should become extraordinary and filled with depth, discovery, reflection, challenge, academic rigor, experimentation, exploration and intellectual adventure.”

Student Life

There are over 1500 undergraduate students enrolled at Wofford College, nearly all of whom reside on campus in year-specific housing. Upperclassmen live in apartment-type housing called “the Village.” The campus supports over 75 clubs and student organizations including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the Terriers field teams in 8 sports (led by the mascot, ‘Boss’) and participate in NCAA Division I-AA competition. Wofford’s vision for the school is that it will be “a premier, innovative and distinctive national liberal arts college defined by excellence, engagement and transformation in its commitment to prepare superior students for meaningful lives as citizens, leaders and scholars.” This is brought to be via the Values espoused by the faculty and staff: each student’s experience—academic, residential and co-curricular—is merged together seamlessly; from the classroom to the playing field to the residence hall. Students learn leadership, engagement and global context, giving them the skills and experience to address complex challenges around such themes as poverty and development, environment and sustainability, technology and society, and identity and culture. Wofford can become a leading educational model for developing well-rounded, exceptional citizens of the 21st century.
