Winston-Salem State University of Winston-Salem, North Carolina is a member of the University of North Carolina and a historically black public research institution. Operating under the motto of “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve” Winston-Salem University was established in 1892 by Dr. Simon Green Atkins as the Winston-Salem Teachers College. Though it began as a small institution, Dr. Atkins oversaw the development and transformation of the Winston-Salem Teachers College into the Winston-Salem State University, a four-year institution, and helped to transition the school from a private leadership to state control. Today, Winston-Salem State University is recognized as a national leader in education and has been named one of the Top Public Schools in the U.S. as well as one of the Top Historically Black Colleges and Universities on the country by the U.S. News & World Report.
Academic Programs
Winston-Salem State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1947. The University is made up of two colleges and a school, namely the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education, the School of Health Sciences, and the University College and Lifelong Learning.More than 30 undergraduate majors and at least 10 graduate programs, including both master’s and doctorate degrees, are offered by Winston-Salem State University. Undergraduate degrees awarded include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and the Bachelor of Social Work, as well as several non-degree and certificate programs. Graduate degrees include the Master of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Occupational Therapy, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling, Master of Healthcare Administration, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and Doctor of Physical Therapy in addition to several graduate-level certificate programs.
Student Life
Winston-Salem State University has a total enrollment figure of more than 5,000, including well over 4,500 undergraduate students. Student housing is offered through the University’s several residence halls which are divided into First Year Halls Residence Halls and Upper Class Halls. Theme Housing options are also available to students where communities are formed around an issue or activity in which the residents share a common interest.More than 100 student clubs and organizations exist at Winston-Salem University which cater to a wide range of interests, hobbies, academics, social issues, and more. These and other campus activities and events allow students to interact with one another outside of the classroom and develop valuable leadership skills. As an NCAA Division II school, Winston-Salem University’s intercollegiate athletic teams, known as the Rams, compete in the Mid-Eastern athletic Conference (MEAC). Sports teams include men’s baseball, basketball, cross country and football as well as women’s basketball, cheerleading, cross country, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.
