Western Illinois University is a public, coeducational institution of higher education located in Macomb, Illinois. Established in 1899 as the Western Illinois Normal and Training School, the school did not officially begin classes until 1902 when it first opened doors to a total of 229 students. By 1957 the school had grown in both scope and size and was renamed Western Illinois University. Today, the University is ranked as a “Best Midwestern College” (The Princeton Review) and was named in the top tier among the “Best Regional Universities” by U.S. News & World Report as well as a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs. Western Illinois University has also received a Carnegie Community Engagement Classification and is listed among the U.S. President’s Honor Roll for Service.

Academic Programs

The vision of Western Illinois University is to be “the leader in educational quality, opportunity, and affordability among regional public universities.” The University’s mission is to empower “students, faculty, and staff to lead dynamic and diverse communities.” Western Illinois University strives to provide “student-centered undergraduate and graduate programs characterized by innovative teaching, research, and service, grounded in interdisciplinary, regional and global perspectives” and seeks to engage “in educational opportunities guided by a professional and diverse faculty and staff in collaboration with alumni and community partners.”

Western Illinois University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1913. The University is divided into several colleges and offers a variety of bachelor’s, master’s, pre-professional, and doctoral degree programs as well as a number of certificate programs. Western Illinois University colleges include the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Business & Technology, the College of Education & Human Services, the College of Fine Arts & Communication, and the Centennial Honors College.

Student Life

Western Illinois University has a total enrollment figure of more than 11,000, including well over 900, undergraduate students, with at least 90% of students come from Illinois. Student housing is offered through several residence halls each of which vary slightly with difference such as location, resources, and the primary community.

Western Illinois University is home to a number of active student-led clubs, organizations and groups which cater to a wide range of interests and provide valuable opportunity to interact with fellow classmates and grow in leadership skills. The University’s Office of Student Activities also aids in providing students with practical, educational and leadership extracurricular opportunities while Western Illinois University’s Campus Recreation offers variety of fitness opportunities, intramural sports programs and club sports. The University’s several varsity athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I-AA level and the University is a member of the Summit League. The University’s football team competes in the Football Championship Subdivision within the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
