Walsh University is located in North Canton, OH (a suburb of Canton) and is a private 4-year Roman Catholic school. It was founded in 1960 as Walsh College by the Brothers of Christian Instruction and became a University in 1993. The 130+ acre campus enjoys a suburban setting with many trees, a large central quad and much green space to enjoy the outdoors. The campus features contemporary and modern architecture in it 20+ buildings. The Walsh University Peace Pole has attracted notable visitors including Coretta Scott King and Mother Teresa as advocates of peace. Nearby Canton is home to the NFL Hall of Fame; it is noteworthy that several professional football players are alumni of Walsh University.

Academic Programs

Walsh University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s Degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, Master’s Degrees and Doctorates in over 65 fields. The university is comprised of five schools: Byers School of Nursing; DeVille School of Business; School of Arts and Sciences; School of Behavioral and Health Sciences and Division of Education. The school is recognized for its Nursing program as well as Physical Therapy and Teacher Education; the largest programs on campus are in Business and Nursing. The school has satellite campuses in Akron, Medina and Canfield as well as an overseas campus in Castel Gandolfo, Italy. Per the Mission statement, Walsh University is dedicated to educating its students to become leaders in service to others through a values-based education with an international perspective in the Judeo-Christian tradition…[and] believes in the desirability of a small university that promotes academic excellence, a diverse community and close student-teacher interactions. The University provides its students a higher education that fosters critical thinking, effective communication, spiritual growth, and personal, professional and cultural development. Walsh University encourages individuals to act in accordance with reason guided by the example and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Student Life

There are over 2300 undergraduate students enrolled in Walsh University; over a third live on campus among the nine residence halls available. There are many clubs and organizations on campus, including intramural sports. For the varsity athlete, the red and gold Cavaliers field teams in 10 sports and participate in NCAA Division II competition. Students understand that “Walsh University is committed to being a Catholic University of distinction, providing each student with the educational experiences, resources, and opportunities necessary to foster critical thinking, effective communication, spiritual growth, and personal, professional and cultural development. Walsh University is dedicated to educating its students to become leaders in service to others through a values-based education.” The University has stated goals to optimize the impact of each graduate on the culture and world including sustaining the mission and legacy of the Brothers of Christian Instruction; developing or expanding programs that creatively combine the University’s strengths with market demand to produce career-ready students and innovate to create transformational, flexible, student-centered learning experiences.
