The University of Tulsa is a private, 4-year school located in Tulsa, OK. The University was expanded from the Presbyterian School for Girls in 1894 in Muskogee, Indian Territory and renamed in honor of Reverend Henry Kendall, secretary of Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. In 1907, the school relocated to Tulsa – two months before Oklahoma joined the Union. In 1920, the school expanded with a proposed Methodist college and was renamed the University of Tulsa. The 200 acre campus features traditional English Gothic architecture and multiple quads and open areas including Dietler Commons. Notable alumni include radio personality Paul Harvey, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and former Congressman and NFL player Steve Largent.

Academic Programs

The University of Tulsa is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in over 60 fields. The University is comprised of 7 colleges: Kendall College of Arts & Sciences; Collins College of Business; College of Engineering and Natural Sciences; College of Law; Oxley College of Health Sciences; Graduate School; and Continuing Education. Noted for Nursing, Psychology, Teacher Education and Music, the largest programs on campus are in Engineering and Business. The University also maintains both the National Energy Policy Institute. Per the Mission Statement, “The University of Tulsa is a private, independent, doctoral-degree-granting institution whose mission reflects these core values: excellence in scholarship, dedication to free inquiry, integrity of character, and commitment to humanity. The university achieves its mission by educating men and women of diverse backgrounds and cultures to: become literate in the sciences, humanities and arts; think critically and write and speak clearly; succeed in their professions and careers; behave ethically in all aspects of their lives; welcome the responsibility of citizenship, service and leadership in a changing world; [and] acquire the skills and appetite for lifelong learning.”

Student Life

There are nearly 3,500 undergraduate students enrolled in the University of Tulsa, most of whom live on campus among the 12 residence halls and apartment complexes. The University sponsors over 150 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the royal blue, old gold and crimson Golden Hurricanes, led by Captain Cane, field teams in 9 sports and participate in NCAA Division I competition. The University hosts the Bob Dylan Archive featuring documents and objects relating to the famous musician. A Senior tradition is to ring the Kendall Bell upon completion of their last Final Exam. Another beloved tradition is the Festival of Lessons & Carols at Sharp Chapel when the lights are first illuminated, signifying the beginning of the holidays.
