The University of St Thomas is a private, 4-year Catholic school located in Houston, TX, in the Neartown area of the city. The school was founded in 1947 by Basilian Fathers and is named in honor of St Tomas Aquinas and is the only Catholic university within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The urban campus covers 19 city blocks and features the Chapel of St Basil which is noted for its unique architecture and adjacent prayer garden. The building itself is comprised of three geometric forms: sphere, cube and plane. Additionally, it is designed that there is no need for artificial light inside during normal daylight hours.

Academic Programs

The University of St Thomas is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges and offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and Doctorates in over 50 fields of study. The University is comprised of five schools: School of Arts & Sciences; Cameron School of Business; School of Education and Human Services; Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing; and School of Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary and five ‘Centers for Excellence:’ Center for Ethical Leadership ;Center for Faith & Culture; Center for International Studies; Center for Irish Studies; and Center for Thomistic Studies. Noted for Nursing and Theology, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Biology/Bio-Medical fields. Per the Mission Statement, “We are committed to the Catholic intellectual tradition and the dialogue between faith and reason. By pursuing excellence in teaching, scholarship and service, we embody and instill in our students the core values of our founders, the Basilian Fathers: goodness, discipline and knowledge. We foster engagement in a diverse, collaborative community. As a comprehensive university grounded in the liberal arts, we educate students to think critically, communicate effectively, succeed professionally and lead ethically.”

Student Life

There are over 1,750 undergraduate students enrolled in the University of St Thomas, most of whom live on campus among two residence halls and living communities. The University sponsors over 80 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the red and gold Celts field teams in 4 sports and participate in NAIA Division I competition. A calendar tradition is the “Neewollah” Party (Halloween spelled backwards), held every year in October.
