Set in the western suburb of Richmond, VA is the University of Richmond. Founded in 1830 as a manual labor institute for men to become ministers, UR is a private 4-year school that offers a picturesque landscape of American History as well as the natural beauty of the state of Virginia. Richmond, set in the heart of tobacco country as well as a major player in Revolutionary and Civil War history, is home to six Fortune 500 companies including representatives of the finance, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and shipping industries. Richmond is also known as a cultural center and hosts many museums and theatres. Notable alumni of the University of Richmond includes a long list of government officials, athletes and Dr. Charles Stanley of InTouch Ministries.

Academic Programs

Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges, the University of Richmond offers Associates degrees, Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, Master’s degrees, post-masters certificates and Doctorates. The 3 undergraduate schools, the School of Arts & Sciences, Robins School of Business, Jepson School of Leadership Studies combine with the School of Law and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies to confer the degrees to graduates. UR is also recognized by specialized accrediting bodies for their Legal education program and Music and Teacher Education programs. However, the largest program on campus is in the Business Administration and Management programs.

UR’s Mission statement declares that “the mission of the University of Richmond is to sustain a collaborative learning and research community that supports the personal development of its members and the creation of new knowledge. A Richmond education prepares students to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society.” Presently, the only online degree programs are in post-grad continuing studies school.

Student Life

Campus life is bustling for the University of Richmond’s 4,000 students. Housing options include 18 residence halls plus apartments and the many (and diverse) clubs and organizations keep students engaged and busy. Club sports and Intramurals are available for the casual athlete while the blue and red UR Spiders field teams in 10 sports and participates in NCAA Division I-AA competitions. One tradition for the basketball teams is called “midnight mayhem” where the first permitted practice for the men’s and women’s teams are attended by the student body.
