The University of North Alabama is a comprehensive, regional, state-assisted institution of higher education located in Florence, Alabama. Ranked as a top-tier public university by US News & World Report, the University of North Alabama was first created in 1830, making it the oldest four-year public institution in the state of Alabama. Reestablished in 1872 as the LaGrange College, the school was the first state-supported teacher college south of the Ohio River and one year later became one of the nation’s first coeducational colleges. In 1974 the school adopted its current name. The University of North Alabama’s 130 acre campus is surrounded by a residential area with a rich history. Adjacent to the Seminary-O’Neal Historic District, the area is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is especially noted for its residential structures which were built between 1908 and 1943.

Academic Programs

The University of North Alabama is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1934. The University’s mission is to engage in “teaching, research, and service in order to provide educational opportunities for students, an environment for discovery and creative accomplishment, and a variety of outreach activities meeting the professional, civic, social, cultural, and economic development needs of our region in the context of a global community.”

The University of North Alabama is offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs which are paired with excellent academic support services. The University consists of several colleges, including the College of Arts & Sciences; the College of Business; the College of Education & Human Sciences; and the Anderson College of Nursing. The University of North Alabama was the first major university to offer a four-year degree in commercial music, which has grown to become one of the University’s most successful programs. The University of North Alabama is also one of only eleven schools across America which offers an undergraduate degree in industrial hygiene and was the first four-year public institution to offer a culinary arts program.

Student Life

The University of North Alabama has a total enrollment figure of nearly 7,000, including just under 6,000 undergraduate students. According to the US News & World Report, the University boasts one of the highest international enrollment rates of any institution in its category; approximately 10% of the study body is international. The Global Friendship Organization is one of the University’s largest and most influential student organizations on campus. The group primarily organizes campus and community activities and events to help integrate international students more closely with other students as well as with the surrounding community.

More than 140 student-led clubs and organizations are active on the University of North Alabama’s campus, catering to a wide range of passions, interests, and beliefs and providing ample opportunity for students to connect with each other outside of the classroom. As an NCAA Division II school, the University of North Alabama boasts over a dozen varsity athletic teams which compete in the Gulf South Conference.
