The University of Kansas is a public, 4-year school located in Lawrence, KS, between Kansas City and Topeka. The school was founded in 1865 via legislative charter, 4 years after the state was admitted to the Union. The University maintains satellite campuses in Wichita, Overland Park, Salina and Kansas City (KS). The 1100 acre campus features contemporary architecture, an iconic WWII Memorial Campanile and an abundance of open space including Marvin Grove, a massive green space that dates back to 1878. The University also serves as host location for the University of Kansas Natural History Museum and the Spencer Museum of Art. Among many noteworthy alumni are former Senator Bob Dole and NFL Hall of Fame member Gayle Sayers.

Academic Programs

The University of Kansas is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees and Doctorates. Presently, there are five undergraduate degrees, two master’s degrees and two certificate programs available online. The University is comprised of 13 schools: School of Architecture, Design and Planning; School of Business; School of Education; School of Engineering; School of Journalism and Mass Communication; School of Health Professions; School of Law; School of Liberal Arts & Sciences; School of Medicine; School of Music; School of Nursing; School of Pharmacy; School of Social Welfare. Noted for Pharmacy, Art & Design and Music, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Healthcare fields. Per the Mission Statement, “The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university and a center for learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor. KU is the only Kansas Regents university to hold membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), a select group of 62 public and private research universities that represent excellence in graduate and professional education and the highest achievements in research internationally.”

Student Life

There are over 19,000 undergraduate students enrolled in the University of Kansas, most of whom live on campus among the 2 dozen residence halls. The University sponsors a myriad of clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the KU blue and KU crimson Jayhawks, led by Big Jay, Baby Jay and Centennial Jay, field teams in 11 sports and participate in NCAA Division I competition. Kansas fans, acknowledging the local agricultural industry of wheat production, provide their own version of ‘the wave’ called the “waving of the wheat” along with the cheer “Rock Chalk – KU” (a nod to a limestone outcropping found on Mount Oread on campus). Students understand the Vision and Values of the school: “The university is committed to excellence.
