The University of Denver is a private, 4-year school located in Denver, CO, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The school was founded in 1864 as the Colorado Seminary designed to “civilize” the city of Denver which was founded in 1858. In 1880 it was renamed the University of Denver and moved away from the center of town to its current location (just seven miles south of the city). The city of Denver has since expanded the metropolitan reach of the city to encompass the campus. The 125 acre campus is designated as an arboretum and features red brick collegiate architecture with many quads and open areas. Among notable alumni are journalist Bob Berkowitz, playwright Neil Simon and world champion ice skater Michelle Kwan.

Academic Programs

The University of Denver is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission and offers Bachelor’s degrees, post-baccalaureate Certificates, Master’s degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in dozens of fields. Noted for Psychology, Art & Design and Music, the largest programs on campus are in Business and Social Sciences. The undergraduate portion of the university is comprised of seven colleges and schools: Daniel Felix Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science; Daniels College of Business; Division of Natural Sciences & Mathematics; Divisions of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Josef Korbel School of International Studies; Morgridge College of Education; University College. There are 13 Graduate schools, colleges and professional programs. Per the Mission Statement, “The mission of the University of Denver is to promote learning by engaging with students in advancing scholarly inquiry, cultivating critical and creative thought and generating knowledge. Our active partnerships with local and global communities contribute to a sustainable common good.”

Student Life

There are over 5,700 undergraduate students enrolled in the University of Denver, many of whom live on campus among the varied residence halls and living communities. The University sponsors many clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the crimson and gold Pioneers field teams in 10 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AAA competition. The University’s stated Core Values include “strive for excellence, innovation, engagement, integrity and inclusiveness” which align with the school’s Goals: Community – We will create a diverse, ethical and intellectually vibrant campus community to provide a challenging and liberating learning environment.
