The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university established in 1919 and located in the thriving metropolis of Los Angeles, California. Situated on a 419-acre campus in the heart of the city with 4 million people and the 15th largest economy, UCLA employs a positive “can-do” attitude that permeates throughout its entire campus and programs. The most applied-to university in the nation, nearly 40% of UCLA undergraduate receive Pell Grants, which is one of the highest percentages of any top-tier university in the nation. UCLA’s alumni, faculty, and researches include an impressive list of Nobel Prize winners, MacArthur Fellows, Fields medalists, two Turing Award winners, and several Academy Award winners. Approximately 140 companies have been created based on technology developed at UCLA and the university operates with a global approach.

Academic Programs

UCLA awards both undergraduate and graduate-level degrees and is accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. UCLA offers over 3,000 undergraduate courses through 100+ academic departments with over 125 majors. Undergraduate programs are offered through several of the university’s colleges and divisions, including the College of Letters and Science; Social Sciences Division; Humanities Division; Physical Sciences Division; Life Sciences Division; Undergraduate Education Division; School of Arts and Architecture; Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science; The Herb Alpert School of Music; School of Theater, Film, and Television; and School of Nursing. Over 150 graduate degree programs are offered through UCLA’s 8+ graduate and professional departments and schools, including 40 doctoral programs that rank among the top 10 in their fields nationwide.

UCLA’s academic requirements are among the most rigorous in the nation and faculty members make it a point to not simply teach students about groundbreaking inventions and discoveries, but to include them in the research, students working side-by-side with their professors. UCLA offers a wide range of innovative academic opportunities including internships, research and experiential learning opportunities; study abroad opportunities; and concurrent and articulated degree programs.

Student Life

UCLA enrolls nearly 42,000 students, including over 29,000 undergraduates. Approximately 96% of freshmen live on campus in university housing. All of UCLA’s residence halls are within a few minutes walking distance of each other and classrooms are not much farther away. UCLA’s beautiful campus features amenities such as palm-tree terraces, cafes, vibrant vistas, and a number of recreational centers. The dining experience at UCLA is one of the most nationally acclaimed and award winning in the nation. Students may choose between an array of dining facilities and programs including, Pan-Asian cuisine, Mediterranean delights, wood-fired pizza, and classic American favorites. UCLA’s Bruin Plate is one of the nation’s first health-themed dining halls and places emphasis on freshness and flavor.

Over 1,000 clubs, kick-start businesses, and organizations exist on campus and each year UCLA students participate in the Bruin Bash, an annual festival which features top performers. An NCAA Division I-A school, UCLA athletes have won over 100 NCAA Championships and brought home more than 250 Olympic medals.
