Founded in 1968, Stockton University began as Stockton State College, a public college chartered by the state of New Jersey to provide a state-supported college in southern New Jersey (Rutgers-Camden was public, but independent of state control). Campus was placed in Galloway Township, in the center of the Pine Barrens, which just ten years later would be designated a national preserve by Congress. A small, public liberal arts institution, Stockton just reached university status in 2015 as the result of years of growth and development. U.S. News & World Report and the Princeton Review both recognize Stockton as one of the top regional universities in the Northeast – top 15 among public colleges, according to U.S. News.

Academic Programs

As a regional, public institution, Stockton’s primary mission is providing opportunity for New Jersey residents, a goal it has done admirably for nearly fifty years. Stockton’s faculty is exceptional, a highly diverse group in which 95% have the highest degree in their field. Stockton offers more than 50 degree programs, and has had particular success with practical, professional and career fields like criminal justice, physical therapy, and computer science. From its location in the Pine Barrens and near the Jersey Shore, Stockton is also becoming known for business, including tourism and hospitality. Stockton combines the traditional liberal arts with the real-world needs of New Jersey’s people.

Stockton is deeply engaged with its region, as its original charter intended. Like other regional universities, Stockton puts the needs of south Jersey’s citizens first, from community service to continuing education. Initiatives like the Small Business Development Center, the Southern Regional Institute, and the Stockton Center on Successful Aging help Stockton provide for the educational and developmental needs of southern New Jersey. Thanks to its location in a national preserve, Stockton is also a national leader in sustainability and green initiatives, putting great effort into building one of the most environmentally friendly campuses in the US.

Student Life

Stockton serves just under 9000 students, a third of whom live on-campus. As the winner of the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented by INSIGHT magazine, Stockton is noted for their diversity not only in student body, but in their faculty as well. Stockton’s relatively small size gives students the opportunity to develop strong connections and build a close-knit community on-campus, aided by more than 130 student-led organizations and clubs. These include honor societies, professional networking groups, and clubs dedicated to hobbies, fun, and games.

The Stockton Ospreys compete in the NCAA Division III, with 16 men’s and women’s sports including basketball, baseball and softball, and soccer. Stockton’s track & field and soccer teams are particularly successful, with numerous conference championships under their belts. Clubs sports are more diverse and unusual, including table tennis, fishing, ultimate frisbee, and – this being the modern world – Quidditch. Stockton students stay busy, and there is truly a place for everyone.
