Southeastern Louisiana University is a public, coeducational institution located in Hammond, Louisiana and is the third-largest university in the state. Founded in 1925, the University began as a “grass-roots movement” by residents of Hammond and the surrounding area. Originally called the Hammond Junior College, the two-year co-educational institution taught students in the subjects of the arts and sciences, which culminated in a teaching certificate. In 1928 the school became the Southeastern Louisiana College and was formally adopted into the Louisiana state education system; nearly ten years later in 1937 the College was authorized to offer four-year programs and conferred its first baccalaureate degrees in 1939. By 1960 the college was again authorized to expand and began including master’s programs in its degree offerings. In 1970 the College achieved university status and adopted current name.

Southeastern Louisiana University’s mission is “to lead the educational, economic and cultural development of southeast Louisiana.” The University offers more than 60 degree programs (two of which are offered entirely online), including more than 40 undergraduate majors, nearly 20 master’s degrees and a couple of doctoral degrees.
