Seattle University (commonly referred to as Seattle U, or SU), located in Seattle, Washington, is a private Jesuit Catholic university. Known for its forward-thinking and holistic education model, Seattle U is dedicated to educating the whole person, following the Jesuit tradition. The school was recently ranked among the Best Graduate Schools in the nation and has been named the sixth “Best in the West” by U.S. News & World Report. Seattle U’s campus boasts an award-winning landscape with tree-lined malls, colorful Japanese gardens, and green space, all of which is maintained using beneficial insects rather than pesticides, making it an environmentally friendly space. The Chapel of St. Ignatius serves as a landmark as well as the university’s spiritual center.

Academic Programs

Seattle University holds regional accreditation through the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and awards degrees ranging from bachelors to doctorates. The university offers more than 60 undergraduate programs, 30+ graduate programs and at least three doctoral programs through multiple colleges and schools, including the Albers School of Business; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Education; College of Nursing; College of Science and Engineering; Matteo Ricci College; School of Law; School of New and Continuing Studies; and the School of Theology and Ministry.

Seattle U places emphasis on providing students with a highly personalized education experience; students have ready access to advisors, faculty, and courses and a two-year pre-major program is offered to help uncertain students explore and discover their academic interests by building a solid foundation in the liberal arts. Nationally recognized by Open Doors, nearly a third of all undergraduate students participate in the university’s study abroad programs which take place in over 40 countries.

Student Life

More than 7,000 students are enrolled at Seattle U, including over 4,000 undergraduates; the student body is comprised of approximately 59% women and 41% men and international students make up more than 10% of all students. A close-knit community, housing is guaranteed for freshmen and sophomores and a number of upperclassmen also choose to remain on campus for all four-years. Traditional residence halls are reserved primarily for first and second year students, while juniors and seniors are offered housing in the Archbishop Murphy Apartments which provide them with a greater level of flexibility.

More than 120 student-led clubs and organizations exist, including community service, cultural heritage, honor societies, professional developments, and recreational groups. Seattle University’s 64,000 square-foot Student Center serves as a hub of student life and the Lee Center for the Arts, which seats over 130, showcases theatre and musical performances. Seattle University’s nearly 20 varsity sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level and the school is a member of the Western Athletics Conference.
