Oklahoma Christian University is a small, private liberal arts college in Oklahoma City, the state’s capital and largest city. Founded in 1950 as a junior college, OC is affiliated with the Churches of Christ, and shares a founder with Florida College. While the college was originally located in Bartlesville, OK, a relocation to Oklahoma City in 1958 allowed the institution to delve deeply into the life of Oklahoma’s capital, providing more opportunity for outreach and service, as well as attracting students. OC has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report and the Princeton Review as one of the top regional institutions in the West.
Academic Programs
As a Churches of Christ institution, and a small liberal arts college, OC counts spiritual and intellectual development as its highest priority, using the traditional liberal arts structure and an underlying biblical worldview to prepare students for their careers and lives of service and leadership. OC’s programs are largely in the areas of humanities, social sciences, and professional study, including acclaimed programs in History and Political Science, and excellent Accounting, Management, and Marketing programs in business. OC’s Biology graduates also have an impressive 90% acceptance rate into medical school, far higher than the national average.OC is also known for excellent academic support. Oklahoma Christian was one of the first campuses in the US to offer campus-wide wifi and a laptop for every student, recognizing the changes taking place in education. Small class sizes, and a 13:1 student/faculty ratio, help OC students develop community and find mentors within the faculty, particularly important in light of OC’s emphasis on spiritual growth and faith in practice. The university’s location in Oklahoma City, and its long association with the city government, business, and industry, gives students many options for internships and employment before and after graduation.
Student Life
Oklahoma Christian’s student body numbers just over 2000 undergraduates and 500 graduate students, with men making up a slight majority over women. While OC welcomes students from 44 states and 44 nations, the majority of students come from Oklahoma and Texas (64%), and ethnic minorities make up just under a third of the student body. The campus is highly residential, with 80% of students living on-campus, so student life largely consists of official events and the 60 student-led organizations that build campus culture.As a Christian college, community service and engagement is central to student life at OC. More than 60% of students are actively involved in service or missions, with more than 40 officially organized ministry groups and activities. Many students also take part in international missions in areas ranging from Europe, Africa, and South America. Study-abroad opportunities are also popular, including programs in Honduras, Korea, and Japan.
