Northeastern University is a private, 4-year institution located in Boston, MA. Founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men; the name was changed to Northeastern College in 1916 and became Northeastern University in 1921. Women were first admitted after WWII. Situated in the Fenway/Kenmore, Back Bay neighborhoods of metropolitan Boston, the 70 acre campus features a surprising amount of open space and trees for its urban location. The campus features buildings of varied style, including modern and contemporary architecture. The University also has satellite locations in Charlotte, NC, Seattle, WA and Silicon Valley, CA for graduate degree programs. Boston, a city with a rich history, serves as an exciting backdrop for higher education.

Academic Programs

Northeastern University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, post-masters Certificates and Doctorates in over 65 fields of study. Noted for Pharmacy, Nursing and Public Health fields, the largest programs on campus are in Business, Engineering and Healthcare fields. The University is comprised of 9 colleges and schools: College of Arts, Media and Design, D’Amore-McKim School of Business, College of Computer and Information Science, College of Engineering, Bouve College of Health Sciences, School of Law, College of Professional Studies, College of Science and College of Science and Humanities, as well as over 30 Research Centers. The University sponsors a robust study abroad program also. Per the Mission Statement, the University is “committed to providing career-focused educational programs that are designed to accommodate the complex lives of motivated learners. Offered in a variety of innovative formats, our courses are taught by accomplished scholars and practitioners who have real-world experience. The result is an educational experience founded on proven scholarship, strengthened with practical application, and sustained by academic excellence.”

Student Life

There are over 13,500 undergraduate students enrolled in Northeastern University. Most live on campus among a dozen residence halls. The University sponsors over 200 clubs and student organizations, including club sports and intramurals. For the varsity athlete, the Northeastern red, Warm gray and black Huskies, led by Paws, field teams in 9 sports and participate in NCAA Division I-AAA competition. Among school traditions is the idea that good luck can be had if a student rubs the nose of the Husky statue in Ell Hall; fortunes are sure to rise!
