Nicholls State University is a public university located in Thibodaux, Louisiana and is part of the University of Louisiana System. Established in 1948, the University was named in honor of Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls who served as a two-term Louisiana state governor and as a Louisiana Supreme Court chief justice. Located on a 280-plus acre campus which was once part of the historic Acadia Plantation, Nicholls State University is located approximately 50 miles southwest of New Orleans and only 60 miles southeast of Baton Rouge. Among Nicholls State University’s distinctions, the University offers the only four-year degree programs in culinary arts and geomatics in the state of Louisiana and supplies approximately 80% of the Bayou Region’s teachers and nurses.
Academic Programs
Nicholls State University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and has been so since 1964. The University awards associates, baccalaureate, master’s and specialist degrees. Nicholls State University is also the state of Louisiana’s designated site for offering services to students with dyslexia and is home to the Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders.Among the programs available, Nicholls State University offers the Bachelor of Arts in the areas of English, Government, History, Mass Communication, Music, Psychology, and Sociology; the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art; the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies; the Bachelor of Science in Nursing; and the Bachelor of Science in the areas of Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, Culinary Arts, Dietics, Educational Degree Programs, Finance, Geomatics, General Family and Consumer Sciences (Child, Family & Social Services), Health Sciences, Management, Marketing, Mathematics, and Petroleum Services. At the graduate level, the University offers an Executive Master of Business Administration; Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Master of Business Administration; Master of Education; Master of Science in Community/Technical College Mathematics; Master of Science in Marine and Environmental Biology; Master of Science in Nursing; and a Specialist in School Psychology.
Student Life
Nicholls State University has a total enrollment figure of more than 6,000, including nearly 5,500 undergraduate students. Female students outnumber men by about 30% and more than 35 states and over 40 foreign countries are represented in the student body with minority students making up more than 30% of students. Student housing is offered in the form of several residence halls; these include traditional housing options as well as an international living/learning community and upperclass housing. Family housing options are also available for students with dependents.More than 100 student organizations are active on Nicholls State University’s campus, covering subjects and interests such as the arts, music, politics, pre-professional, recreational, religion, sports, social activities and more. At least a dozen Greek fraternities and sororities have a presence on campus as well. Sports also play an important role in campus life; an NCAA Division I school, Nicholls State University’s varsity teams compete in the Southland Conference.
